East Carolina Diabetes & Obesity Institute

The East Carolina Diabetes and Obesity Institute (ECDOI) is comprised of more than forty faculty members from seventeen different departments across the entire ECU campus. ECDOI investigators share a collaborative research mission—coordinate interdisciplinary basic and translational research programs related to diabetes and obesity. In late 2013, our research headquarters was completed. The 25,000 square foot research facility is located on the 4th floor of the East Carolina Heart Institute at 115 Heart Drive in Greenville, NC.

Open Office

Included in this facility are offices for twenty-four faculty and administration. As many as eighty students, post doctoral scholars, research staff also occupy the space in the large open office area. Small group meeting tables area available at six locations in the main office area. This open office concept encourages interaction and inclusion for our talented researchers.

For a private meeting, we have two fully equipped conference rooms. The conference rooms both have audio and video capabilities via a laptop connection to the huge 3D capable HD flat TVs with stereo sound bars. Teleconferencing speaker phones and large marker boards are included.

Multifunctional laboratories

After passing through the office space, you will find twenty-four separate specialty laboratories. Insides this space are six cell culture rooms: one for human tissue culture, one for virus, and four multipurpose culture labs. Other specialty labs include: radioactivity, bacteria, histochemistry, three imaging suites, blood analysis, and two chemical alcoves. We also have a vivarium with four holding rooms and two procedure rooms. Finally, two large core equipment rooms house most of the shared equipment for the institute.

Open laboratories

The heart of this facility resides in the large open laboratory. Twenty double sided lab benches line the south half of the floor. This amounts to around 6,000 square feet of bench space for our primary investigators. In the open lab, no walls separate any of the benches, allowing for continuous opportunities for integration and collaboration.
